In-expensive christmas furniture gifts.

Living as a family of five, we are on a very limited budget.  So at christmas, if my husband decides that he wants to purchase a piece of furniture for me, he does some bargain hunting.  We have some thrift stores in our area that sell used furniture at a very reasonable price.  If you are handy with a tools and some paint, then you would be able to purchase some quality furniture at half the price of new furniture.
Throughout the years, we have save hundreds of dollars buying furniture and restoring it for christmas presents for various family members.  I find the smaller the store, the better the prices, as they don’t have a whole lot of space to keep all this inventory on hand.  So, if your looking for that unique piece of furniture for a loved one at christmas, then the smaller thrift shops are the place to look.

Has anyone here been able to find that special buy for a loved one and restore it themselves for half the cost of a new piece of furniture?
